Something You Should Know about Sublimation Printing

sublimation definitionBefore mentioned sublimation printing, we should know the definition of terms “sublimation”. Sublimation is a type of phase transition, or a change in a state of matter, just like melting, freezing, and evaporation. Through sublimation, a substance changes from a solid to a gas without ever passing through a liquid phase. Dry ice, solid CO2, provides a common example of sublimation.

This is exactly what happens in sublimation printing.  A sublimation printer prints the ink on a specially coated paper.  The ink dries and turns into a solid.  When heat and pressure is applied to the sublimation inks on the paper, it quickly turns to gas and is forced into the polyester substrate.  When heat is taken away, the gas becomes trapped in the polyester permanently.

What Can It Do for You?

sublimation printing process ensures that the image you transfer onto your item won’t fade over time.

The finish is also smooth, soft, and stylish because it literally becomes one with the substrate.

Sublimation has been around for over 20 years; Digital sublimation printing started primarily in the new industries such as – sportswear, fashion, trade shows and others..  That alone will attract new customers and allow you to make additional revenue from existing customers.  In addition to new products, the sublimation process prints full color images.  This is huge because a sublimated mug can produce much better gradients and drop shadows than a screen printed mug can.  It’s ideal for photographs!  Also, sublimation has no minimums, it costs the same price to produce one item as it does a hundred items.sublimation printing

2 Machines That You Should Know About Dye Sublimation Printing

Successful dye-sublimation requires the following two-part process: Print graphics onto special transfer paper using sublimation inks, Use a heat press to transfer the ink-on-paper to the item you want to decorate. Printing is the first step of the process in dye-sublimation.

How to Choosing a Sublimation Printer?

Sublimation printers can be divided into: Narrow Format; Desktop Format and Wide Format.

How to choosing the right sublimation printer requires first determining what you want to produce.

Are you printing large designs on apparel? Like sportswear, or hard substrates, such as cellphone covers, coffee mugs, or smaller items like bag tags and layards?

Desktop Format: These are office-style units that print on individual sheets of paper and fit easily on any desk or table surface. They are ideal for startup operations due to their cost and ease of use. Paper sizes range from 8.5″ x 11″ to 13″ x 19″ (See “Desktop Format Media Sizes” for a full list of media sizes that can be used with this format.).sublimation printing

Narrow Format: These freestanding, commercial-grade units print onto rolls of paper ranging from 24-44 inches wide. They are ideal for growing businesses
that need to generate larger images or higher-volume production.

Wide Format: These freestanding, industrial-grade units print onto rolls of paper measuring 44-104 inches wide. They are ideal for production facilities with specialized needs such as textile printing, trade-show banners, allover garments, etc.

Consumables That Closely Related To Sublimation Printing

Sublimation Paper:

Sublimation paper is used with sublimation inks for heat transfer printing. Again, sublimation papers are important for an excellent heat transfer printing’s output. It is because the sublimation paper is the medium to transfer the inks onto the sublimation blanks.sublimation printing

Just imagine, if it is a poor sublimation paper, it will only transfer 50% of sublimation inks onto sublimation blanks, and you will waste another 50% of sublimation inks everytime. In long run business, this is very …. well, your inks are your money. Get it?

Dye Sublimation Inks

Dye sublimation inks are a disperse dye suspended in a liquid solvent, like water. The images are initially printed on coated heat-resistant transfer paper as a reverse image of the final design, which is then transferred onto polyester fabric in a heat press operating at a temperature around 180 to 210 C (375 F).

Heat Press Machine

After printing graphic onto the sublimation transfer paper material, The second step is taken role of transfer paper and brought it over to the heat press unit. There are four main types of the heat press:

Flatbed Heat Presssublimation printing

Although they can’t effectively manage the kind of rolls and fabric sizes that a Calendar heat press can, flatbed style heat presses such as the Geo Knight Max Press are versatile presses that can heat transfer onto fabric as well as aluminum, hardboard, floor mats and other unique media.

Calender Heat Press

Which are large format presses that are built for flags, large exterior banners, and other large soft-signage applications, as well as day-to-day soft signage and fabric sublimation. With the addition of table attachment to your calender unit, users can cut and sew apparel pieces.

3D Vacuum Heat Press

A 3D vacuum heat press is a compact desktop machine that allows heat transfer onto materials with a curved edge or shape. Sublimation blanks and pre-treated objects, such as smart phone covers, mugs, ceramic plates, picture frames, sporting goods, buttons and others are available for sublimation by this handy device.

If you’re planning to starting sublimation printing business, you’ll also need the following essential items:

Computer and RIP Software; Cutting Device & Sewing Device.

Sublistar offer you one-stop sublimation printing service. The above mentioned devices and consumables can all be purchased in a single package to make it simpler for new users.
