WHY POLYESTER WORKS SO WELL IN DYE SUBLIMATION PRINTING?

dye sublimation printingDye sublimation is an advanced printing method that involves transferring text or graphic images onto items. When it comes to picking a fabric for dye sublimation printing, polyester is the best choice. Here is why polyester works so well in dye sublimation printing:

1. Beautiful, lasting printed colors
Dye sublimation printing consists of the following steps:
1) A graphic or text is digitally printed on sublimation transfer paper.
2) The transfer paper is placed in a heat press. The heat press helps sublimate the print onto a fabric.

It’s important to test fabrics before dye sublimation printing. Due to high heat, with temperatures ranging from 380 to 400 degrees, a fabric may easily burn. Heat is used to convert the dye sublimation ink into a gaseous state.

Fabrics such as cotton, nylon, etc. cannot hold the ink during the heating process.  Polyester is the only material that can enable the bonding of the ink and ensure beautiful, long lasting colors. This is why national flags, banners and graphic t-shirts are made of polyester.

2. Fade-resistant
Printed graphics, text or logo on polyester fabric will not crack, fade or diminish. No matter how many times you wash it, the printed image won’t come off or lose color.

On the other hand, printed images on a cotton fabric can chip or peel off. Cotton is prone to fading, especially after repeated washing.

If you are looking for permanent printing then polyester is the best one. Printed images are embedded in the fabric’s substrate rather than printed on the surface.

3. Rich printed colors
Last but not least, polyester ensures rich printed colors. As sublimation dye is converted to gas during heating, the fabric’s tone blend into each other. The final product looks absolutely stunning.

4. Percentage of polyester in a fabric
It’s a good idea to use a 100 percent polyester fabric to achieve the best result. But, you can even work with at least 60 percent polyester fabric.

You could mistakenly print the transfers upside down. There could also be adhesive residues on the platen. A heat press will inadvertently get dirty over the course of its operational life. There are a number of reasons for this to happen. It could also be wearing of the parts that make up the equipment. So you need to clean the machine in time. If you do not do this, your machine will be faulty.

 

 

How to Make the Heat Press Remain in Top Condition

1. Speed is good

There is no substitute for speed. Consider this scenario: you have mistakenly printed the plastisol heat transfer on the top of press and not on the shirt as it was actually intended. When you realize your mistake, it is important that you quickly remove the transfer. When the ink is exposed to high heat for a period of time, then it will get “cooked”. The transfer will then be extremely hard to remove. You will suffer material losses.

2. Reduce heat

The heat should be lowered. Accidents are more common than you think. You could suffer burns if you try to clean the press when the equipment temperature. If you see something printed not what it should be, turn the machine off quickly. Your intention is to clean the machine. There should be no kind of debris or any ink present on the equipment. You can cool the machine when it is warm. In fact a little warm is preferable as it will be easier for you to scrape off the adhesives or inks. You should not even touch a hot press. It will burn you. Protect yourself by wearing heatproof gloves or any comparable hand protection.

How to Clean the Heat Press

Be gentle when cleaning the machine. Use soft cloth. If you do not have a proper cleaning cloth, use an old t-shirt. It should be non-abrasive. Use water and mild soap. A few heat presses could have platens coated with non-stick material. Use of an abrasive may result in the coating to be scratched off.
